FAQS Why was the Performance Space identified as a project for this pilot? There had been an ongoing interest locally in the former bandstand site which grew with the establishment of the Southside Festival in 2007-8. The Scottish Government’s decision in 2008-9 to run two pilot schemes – one rural and one urban, one by a single community council and the other as a partnership led to Queen’s Park getting the opportunity to participate. Several community councils and communities had a shared interest in the Park and the contribution it can make now and in the future as a safe, green environment offering opportunities for sport, recreation, relaxation and play for all. South Side community councils already had a track record of working together on issues such as the New Victoria and Pollok Park developments, and events such as the South Side Festival.
What will the new area look like? The design is still being developed, partly in response to feedback from you. From outside the existing hedge and railings it may look little changed. On the inside there will still be terraces and a flat performance/ activity area but the whole space will have been restructured, the surfaces upgraded and the adjacent WC/changing room building restored.
When will it happen? The Scottish Government funding for the steering group runs from April 2009 to end March 2010. This will enable preliminary consultation, planning and costing to take place but will not be sufficient to know the outcome of grant applications to be known and work to take place. Subject to the outcome of grant applications and commitments to help in kind made in 2009-10, it should be possible to complete works in 2010-11.
How much will it cost? The final overall cost of the project has yet to be determined but will be a 6-figure sum. The Steering Group are being realistic about the availability of funding. It is possible work will be phased to enable funds to be raised over a period.
Where will the money come from? The preliminary £15,000 granted by the Scottish Government is paying for surveys, questionnaires and analysis, and specialised help on the structure, design and fund raising. By April 2010 we expect to have begun to make grant applications based on a full researched and prepared costings to several grant giving bodies, including Area Committees and external bodies such as the Lottery. Glasgow City Council are committing some help in kind for administrative support, groundworks and repairs to the WC building. We can also establish the value of the voluntary work being undertaken by the Steering Group and others.
How can I keep in touch and get involved? Make www.qppp.org.uk one of your Favourites. You can keep in touch with the developing project and any events by signing up for the e-newsletter [LINK]. We will let you know if there are opportunities for volunteers to help in practical ways with further surveys or mailings, by becoming local ambassadors for the project, etc.
Who will manage the site when the work is done? The site is part of Queen’s Park which belongs to Glasgow City Council. The Steering Group is in discussion with GCC to establish a management structure that will involve local representatives to manage and programme the site.
